48 Hours in Whitstable: Oysters, Art, and the Allure of the Sea

48 Hours in Whitstable: Oysters, Art, and the Allure of the Sea

What can we say, it’s worth spending 48 hours in Whitstable, Kent! :)

Stepping off the train, we were greeted by the radiant sun shining over Whitstable, a picturesque seaside town on the coast of Kent in Southern England. We had been here once before, and it was so nice to be able to return! Just an hour’s train ride from London, we were eager to dive back into the wonders of this renowned fishing town, adorned with pastel-coloured fishing cottages, expansive pebbled beaches, and an array of quirky shops.

Every corner of Whitstable whispered tales of its rich maritime heritage, a legacy that stretches back to Roman times.

Take a look:

The Oyster Experience

The town’s pride in its oyster farming is palpable, and we learned of the annual Whitstable Oyster Festival, a grand celebration complete with parades, performances, and, naturally, oyster-eating competitions. Tasting the famed Whitstable oysters was the crowning jewel. The taste was a harmonious blend of saline, a touch of saltiness, complemented by a creamy sweetness. One was simply not enough.

Artistic Flair and Coastal Pubs

Our stroll down Harbour Street was nothing short of enchanting. The street, alive with energy, was a tapestry of quirky boutiques, unique shops, and a delightful mix of colourful weatherboard houses, historic edifices, and charming cottages. Our exploration led us to the intriguing street art by Catman, Whitstable’s answer to Banksy. For those in search of a unique coastal pub experience, “Neppies” or Old Neptunes is the place to be.

A Culinary Finale

As our 48 hours neared its end, we decided to indulge in the town’s best fish and chips at Ossie’s. The generous servings and the golden, flaky fish were the perfect culmination to our Whitstable adventure. Sitting on the beach, watching the sun dip below the horizon and the waves gently caress the shore, we reflected on our time in Whitstable.

A town that seamlessly marries its rich history with modern allure. If the Kent Coast is on your radar, Whitstable is a must-visit. A town that’s not just picturesque but also dog-friendly. And remember, the oysters are a must-try!

Best Beaches in Ibiza + Unforgettable Boat Tours: A 2024 Guide

Best Beaches in Ibiza + Unforgettable Boat Tours: A 2024 Guide

Ibiza, an island renowned for its vibrant nightlife, stunning beaches, and rich history, has always been a top destination for travellers. But there’s a unique way to experience the island’s magic that many might overlook: boat tours. We recently embarked on such a journey, and our experience was nothing short of magical.

Setting Sail in Ibiza

The moment we set sail, the atmosphere was electric. The Mediterranean’s crystal-clear waters stretched endlessly, with the sun casting a shimmering trail across the waves. The boat was filled with an enthusiastic crowd, all eager to experience Ibiza’s magic. Laughter, dancing, and the clinking of glasses set the tone for the day.

One of the boat’s standout features was a slide that plunged directly into the refreshing waters of the Mediterranean. Imagine the thrill of diving into the sapphire sea right off the deck of a party boat. It’s an experience that’s hard to replicate.

Discovering Hidden Gems

The boat tour wasn’t just about partying and enjoying the sea. It was also an opportunity to explore parts of the island that aren’t easily accessible by land. The stunning rock formations, hidden coves, and pristine beaches were a sight to behold.

One of the highlights of our journey was a visit to Cala Bassa Beach. Known for its luxe beach clubs, outstanding DJs, cozy sunbeds, and top-notch restaurants, Cala Bassa is a must-visit. The beach’s atmosphere was described as vibrant, fun, and electric. It’s a place that truly needs to be seen to be believed.

During our time at Cala Bassa, I had a chance to chat with a German lady who visits Ibiza every season for work. We both agreed that the island’s magic is undeniable. The beach, with its golden sands and azure waters, was a testament to Ibiza’s natural beauty.

A Day to Remember

The boat cruise lasted for about five to six hours, covering some of the most popular beaches around Ibiza. It’s the best way to see the island! The experience was enhanced by the company of new friends, all excited to explore Ibiza’s hidden treasures. And of course, topped off by the magical Ibiza sunset.

For anyone planning a trip to Ibiza, we have this important piece of advice: don’t miss out on a boat cruise. It offers a unique perspective of the island, allowing travellers to discover spots you wouldn’t necessarily see otherwise.

Ibiza is more than just parties and nightlife. It’s an island filled with natural wonders, hidden gems, and unforgettable experiences. A boat tour is a perfect way to immerse oneself in its magic. So, the next time you find yourself in Ibiza, set sail and let the island’s beauty captivate you.

Royal Events and Ceremonies: annual events you can take part in – 2024!

Royal Events and Ceremonies: annual events you can take part in – 2024!

Each year, there are many Crown-worthy events you can participate in. This post covers a list of Royal Events and Ceremonies to add to your diary now.

Surprisingly, some of our most popular content here is about Royal events. For the past few years, our guides on the summer garden parties have been really popular! We have had requests to compile more opportunities where you can participate in Royal events and ceremonies. So, we’re pleased to share this list of some of the big ones to plan for.

Royal Events and Ceremonies: annual events you can take part in!

The British monarchy is steeped in history and tradition. Numerous royal events and ceremonies take place throughout the year. These events, some of which are open to the public, offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of royalty. Here’s a summary of some of the most significant annual events hosted in England month to month.

January: New Year’s Honours List

The New Year’s Honours List is an annual event where The King recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK. The list is published in the official newspaper of the Crown, The Gazette.

There are events that surround this special occasion. Keep an eye on your local news and Royal sites for more. You can also nominate for the awards. More information is here.

April: Maundy Thursday

Maundy Thursday is the day The King distributes special Maundy money to local pensioners in a UK cathedral or abbey. This day, considered the fifth in the Holy Easter week, recognises people for their service to their community and the church.

In 2023, the Evening Standard published an informative piece about this lesser-known – yet historical – of annual events. Read more here.

April: ANZAC Day

One for my fellow Aussies and New Zealanders. On ANZAC Day (and my birthday!), we remember those who defended our nations far across the sea, but never came home. ANZAC stands for Australian & New Zealand Army Corp.

When we lived in London a few years ago, we heard about an invite-only service at Westminster Abbey that expats can attend. But, you must apply to be considered. Members of the Royal household and other special dignitaries attend. Keep an eye out here on the embassy website for a chance to apply for the coming year.

May: The RHS Chelsea Flower Show

Amazing garden designs, gorgeous floral displays, exclusive shopping and Royal appearances! May marks the start of the spring-summer season in the UK, and this is a great way to celebrate. Find out more here.

June: Trooping the Colour

Also known as The King’s Birthday Parade, Trooping the Colour is a spectacular ceremony that regiments of the British and Commonwealth armies perform. This official State occasion, held on the second Saturday in June in London, marks the official birthday of the British sovereign.

It is always a wonderful spectacle on the ground and in the skies. Thousands of people turn out to attend and line the streets around Buckingham Palace. Anyone can attend, but arrive early to secure a great spot.

June: Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot, held in the third week of June, is a major event in the British social calendar. Each day begins with The Royal Procession, where The King and members of his family arrive in horse-drawn landaus. The Royal Enclosure is at the heart of Royal Ascot, with strict dress codes and exclusive entry requirements.

More information on tickets and dress code can be found on Visit Britain’s site here.

June: Garter Day

Garter Day is a procession and service held each year at Windsor Castle for the Most Noble Order of the Garter, a chivalric order founded by Edward III. The Order is the senior and oldest British Order of Chivalry, and their motto is ‘Honi soit qui mal y pense’ (shame on him who thinks this evil). The ceremony takes place on the Monday of Royal Ascot week.

Visit Royal.uk to find out more about the fascinating history of this day and the procession that takes place.

June: Beating the Retreat

Beating the Retreat is a military ceremony, traditionally performed at the end of the day during times of war. Today, it takes place at Horse Guards Parade for two nights in June each year. The event features military music and precision drills. The Mounted Bands of the Household Cavalry and the Massed Bands of the Household Division put on quit a show!

Beating the Retreat is a ticketed event. The Household Division’s website publishes details on tickets each year.

July: Buckingham Palace Summer Opening

Every summer, the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace open to the public for ten weeks.

Visitors have a unique opportunity to explore the lavish rooms that The King and members of the royal family use to receive and entertain guests on official occasions.

Summer: Garden Parties

Garden Parties are a staple in the Royal calendar. A tradition begun by Queen Victoria in the 1860s, the King hosts a minimum of three parties each summer at Buckingham Palace, and one at Holyrood House in Edinburgh.

These events recognise those who have made significant contributions to public service. You generally receive an invitation to them only once in your life, as they are exclusive events.

We had the great honour of attending in 2019, one of the very last events the late Queen hosted.

November: Remembrance Sunday

We observe Remembrance Sunday on the second Sunday in November. The King and members of the royal family join political leaders, representatives of the armed forces and veterans at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, London, to remember those who have died in conflicts.

Similar to ANZAC Day as mentioned above. Millions of people recognise this day alongside the Royal family.

December: Christmas Broadcast

The King’s Christmas Broadcast is a traditional part of the Christmas Day festivities. We know that even in Australia, many still tune in for the annual message of hope from the King. The ruling monarch uses this broadcast as an opportunity to reflect on the past year and look ahead. Once a radio-only event, it of course now goes live across the world in multiple ways.

These events provide a fascinating insight into the traditions and duties of the British monarchy. Whether you’re a royal enthusiast or simply interested in British culture, all are a chance to dip your toes into the culture and history of the UK.

For more information on events and appearances, keep an eye on royal.uk and themonarchists.com. Other great sources of information for event in London include Time Out and The Londonist.

9 Types of Content to Post on Threads (Meta’s New Social Network) in 2024

9 Types of Content to Post on Threads (Meta’s New Social Network) in 2024

Been tempted away from Instagram for a moment to check out Meta’s latest sensation? If you’re keen to dive into the newest of new apps in 2024, here’s an updated guide on 9 types of content to post on Threads!

Another social media app?

Absolutely, and it’s causing quite a stir. It’s been a while since I posted here about digital and social media. A nostalgic look back shows a quite positive perspective on these platforms from back in 2017. Fast forward to today, and my experience in the content game has led me to something intriguing about Threads.

Like many of you, my phone has been buzzing non-stop with notifications about my new Threads account. This isn’t about my social media clout; rather, it’s a testament to Meta’s clever strategy. At the launch of Threads, Meta offered a slick option to “follow all the people you follow on Instagram” – and I, admittedly in a bit of a daze, clicked “Yes”.

Jumping from 1 to 100 followers overnight without lifting a finger was oddly satisfying. But, as a Twitter aficionado, I can’t help but feel that Meta’s move here is a bit of a shortcut.

Threads’ Fact-Checking Program and its impact on types of content to post on Threads

In 2024, amid the buzz of upcoming significant elections in the U.S. and India, Meta is stepping up its game on Threads with a new fact-checking program. This move is designed to empower fact-checking partners to independently review and rate misinformation on Threads. It’s a significant step, considering the current social media landscape, rife with misinformation.

User Control & Engagement Features

Threads is rolling out a feature allowing users to adjust the demotion level for fact-checked posts, aligning it with Instagram settings. And while Meta and Threads have traditionally downplayed the amplification of news content, the platform is introducing tags and trending topics to foster a more interactive user experience.

Will Meta’s Threads last?

The question on everyone’s lips: even if I figure out what great content to post on Threads, will Threads be a fleeting trend or a mainstay? Initially, Threads captured immense attention, hitting the 100 million user mark in record time. However, the platform saw an 80% drop in active users shortly after. This rollercoaster of user engagement makes it an intriguing case for content creators and marketers alike.

Now, let’s dive into the main agenda: what type of content should you be posting on Threads in 2024 to make a real impact?

Reflecting on types of content to post on Threads

What Type of Content Should I Post on Threads in 2024?

The evolving landscape of Threads in 2024 demands a strategic approach to content. Whether you’re a content creator, marketer, or just someone who loves to engage on social media, understanding how to leverage Threads can be crucial.

Here are 9 types of content to post on Threads now:

1. Question Posts

Engaging your audience has always been key, and it remains so on Threads. Post a question that sparks thought, debate, or allows followers to share their perspectives. Keep your questions simple and straightforward – complex inquiries might disengage your audience. The goal in deciding on types of content to post on Threads is to foster a community. You can do this one question at a time.

2. Animated GIFs and Videos

In the digital era, visual content reigns supreme. On day one of Threads, animated GIFs took center stage. Use GIFs to catch the eye and evoke humor or emotion. Videos, up to 5 minutes in length, are also a great way to engage users on Threads. Remember, in 2024, the average time spent on Threads is just 3 minutes per day, so make those minutes count with captivating visual content.

3. Inspirational Quotes

For those pondering “What should I post on Threads?”, sharing inspirational, humorous, or thought-provoking quotes can be a hit. Such quotes resonate with a wide audience and can be shared in visually appealing formats. Use platforms like Canva to create eye-catching quote graphics. These quick, engaging posts can resonate well with your audience.

4. Lists and Tips

Bite-sized, easy-to-digest content never goes out of style. Share lists or tips relevant to your industry, brand, or general life hacks. With Threads users spending less time on the app, concise and useful content can be particularly effective.

5. Personal Experiences and Stories

Adding a personal touch to your posts can make your content more relatable and authentic. Narratives about personal experiences or stories can help you stand out. As AI continues to shape our digital world, a human touch in your content could be just what’s needed to connect with your audience.

6. Updates and Announcements

Stay relevant by keeping your followers informed with updates and announcements. This could range from personal milestones to brand developments, product launches, or even industry news. Considering the brief attention span on Threads, regular updates can create a sense of anticipation and encourage users to return for more. Consistency is vital – if you’re committing to Threads, regular posts could pave the way to greater engagement.

7. Relevant News and Trends

Even if you’re not an expert in every field, sharing your insights on the latest news or trends can spark valuable conversations. This is especially pertinent given Threads’ new focus on combatting misinformation and providing tools for user control. Share your take on trending topics to initiate dialogue and enhance your visibility. However, remember that Threads is not primarily a news amplification platform, so balance your content accordingly.

8. Challenge or Contest Posts

Everyone loves a good challenge or contest. Engage your audience with creative contests or thought-provoking challenges. This approach not only fosters community interaction but could also attract new followers. Given the infancy of Threads, such interactive content could be a smart strategy to establish your presence on the platform.

9. Pet Pics and Cool Photos

When in doubt, turn to universal favourites – pets and eye-catching photos. My first post on Threads was of my dog (I’m @sarahblinco, by the way), and it’s clear that cute and captivating images have a special place on this platform. Whether it’s a charming pet photo, a stunning travel snapshot, or an irresistible food picture, these posts can be an instant hit.

What to do now?

If you haven’t already, download Threads from your app store and give it a go. The sign-up process is straightforward, especially if you have an Instagram account. While Threads may not have the extensive user base of its competitors yet, early adoption can offer unique opportunities for visibility and engagement.

Threads has carved out its niche in the realm of text-based social media platforms, providing a distinct space for diverse types of ‘micro blog’ posts. By experimenting with the post types listed above, you can create engaging content, enhance your online visibility, and foster a stronger connection with your audience.

Now is a fantastic time to explore Threads. If you’re looking to get noticed by brands or celebrities, the relatively low follower counts on Threads could work in your favor. Stand out with your content and seize the opportunity.

Embracing the Future of Social Media Interaction on Threads

As we navigate through 2024, it’s evident that Threads is more than just another social media platform – it’s a burgeoning ground for innovative content strategies. With its unique features and evolving user base, Threads offers a fresh landscape for digital expression and connection.

Remember, despite the fluctuating trends and user engagement on Threads, the core principles of compelling content remain constant. Authenticity, creativity, and audience engagement are the cornerstones of successful digital storytelling, irrespective of the platform.

Keen to Know Your Thoughts

I’m eager to hear about your experiences and experiments on Threads. Have you found a particular type of content to post on Threads that resonates with your audience? Are there any emerging trends on Threads that have caught your eye? Your insights and feedback are not just valuable to me, but to our entire digital community.

Drop a comment below, or better yet, tag me on Threads (@sarahblinco) with your thoughts and experiences. Let’s explore the possibilities of Threads together, sharing our journeys and learning from each other as we delve into this new digital frontier.

As we continue to explore and understand the intricacies of Threads, stay tuned for more insights, tips, and discussions on how to make the most of this platform. Whether you’re a seasoned social media aficionado or just starting out, there’s always something new to learn and explore in the ever-evolving world of digital media.
