Easy, Beautiful, Delicious – Hotel Review Gran Canaria Adults Only

If you’re looking for a quiet escape in the Canary Islands, this hotel review Gran Canaria is for you. We recently stayed at the wonderful H10 Costa Mogan, an adults-only hotel in Playa del Cura. After just a few hours, it was clear: this trip that we took with Jet2 would be special.

First Impressions and a Warm Welcome

The check-in experience set the tone for our stay. We were welcomed with a glass of bubbles and broad smiles. The luxe large entrance, surrounded by palm trees and soaring cliffs, felt inviting and tranquil. It was immediately evident that this was a place made for relaxation – something that has become desperately needed after a very hectic start to the year.

From the terrace we could see the ocean, glass-bottom boats, and speedboats heading out for dolphin watching. The setting felt peaceful but full of life. It was easy to settle in – it’s truly beautiful.

Our Room: Modern and Comfortable

The room was modern, spacious, stylish, and very clean. It included a king-sized bed, walk-in shower, fast Wi-Fi, a coffee pod machine, and a balcony with sea and pool views. The soft colour scheme helped create a calm and soothing atmosphere.

After each evening’s entertainment came to a close (hosted in M10’s Mogán Lounge Bar from around 9pm-midnight – always a fun time :), we slept soundly. The room was blissfully quiet, the bed was excellent, and the blackout curtains worked perfectly. For a good night’s rest, it really delivered.

Facilities and Activities: Thoughtful Touches Everywhere

The main pool area was one of our favourite spots. There are plenty of loungers, shady areas for when you need a break from the sun, and a relaxed, adults-only vibe. The bar serves drinks and snacks and as we had our handy all-inclusive wristband on, we could access whatever we wanted at any time.

Pool towels are available to borrow at the mini market on site. It also sells lovely gifts, resort wear and basics. On my first day I couldn’t help but buy a beautiful silk sarong and pink bikini: my last purchase like this was a few years ago, so I just went for it!

If you like, you can hire a lovely Bali Bed at H10’s La Riviera Beach Club for €35 per day. In April it wasn’t busy enough for us to consider this, but in the height of summer it could be a good option to guarantee a good place for yourself for the day.

There’s also a small gym, a wellness centre, and free daily classes like Yoga, Pilates and aqua aerobics. These sessions made a big difference to how we felt, and were all hosted by lively, engaging ‘Entertainment Managers’. They helped us reset both physically (needed after our buffet visits!) and mentally. It’s the kind of wellness travel that sneaks up on you – in the best way.

Dining: Excellent Food and Generous Service

Speaking of buffets… we went all-inclusive and were glad we did. The buffet was generous and very high-quality, with lots of fresh salads, fish, grilled vegetables, and desserts. Each meal was different enough to keep things interesting.

The drink service was generous, and the cocktails were well made. Staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Dining here felt calm and comfortable, not rushed or loud.

On the Friday evening, a wonderful saxophonist played while we dined creating a wonderful ambiance in an already sublime setting.

The hotel is well equipped with multiple entertainment and dining spaces. We also adored the Rooftop Sky Bar on the fifth floor overlooking the beach and vast ocean. A second restaurant is on site too but not included in all-inclusive. We loved our selection so much we didn’t feel the need to branch out, but will visit the Costa Fusion Restaurant next time for sure!

Nearby and Easy to Explore

Although you don’t have to leave the resort, there’s a large Spar supermarket nearby as well as a few local eateries. The Spar turned out to be helpful since I’d forgotten to pack deodorant: that could have ended badly!

If you want to explore, Puerto de Mogán is a short taxi ride away. It’s a beautiful marina town with boutique shops and great seafood restaurants. Find out more about our experience there: read more here.

If you’re searching for hotels in Gran Canaria that offer comfort, calm, and good value, H10 Costa Mogan is a fantastic option.

See More, Do More Gran Canaria

You can of course relax and stay around the hotel for your entire trip, it’s easy to do. We sure didn’t want to leave. However, you can also engage in a wide range of activities that get you around the island. Shopping excursions to the capital of Las Palmas, dolphin watching and glass bottom boat rides, all-day jeep experiences, and food tours abound. All of this can be booked via Jet2 on the ground and at your hotel. Easy done.

Looking for a warm and relaxing break in Europe? Enter Gran Canaria with Jet2 – an adults-only getaway done right! From smooth flights to golden beaches and tranquil villages, this trip is ideal for couples or solo travellers seeking sunshine and serenity. Honestly, our expectations were entirely exceeded which hasn’t been our experience for a long time! This was our first time flying with Jet2 but certainly will not be our last.

Jet2 from London Stansted

Our holiday started the moment we arrived for our flights at London Stansted Airport. Check-in with Jet2 was fast and easy. The staff were exceedingly friendly, and the flight departed on time. It was a comfortable and relaxed journey, with Jet2 offering excellent service throughout. On the other side, there was no faff: great signage and support enabled a smooth transition to our transfer bus. In fact, from the beginning of the trip to after we’d left the hotel, text messages arrived from Jet2 offering help, advice and directions, including to the bus bay number where our transfer was waiting at Gran Canaria’s airport. We are definitely surprised and delighted by their service and can confirm that the return trip was just as easy.

Welcome to Playa del Cura, Gran Canaria

We were based in Playa del Cura, a peaceful beachside town in the southwest of Gran Canaria. The area is calm and less crowded than other coastal spots, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet. Its beach is small but clean, and there’s a relaxed atmosphere all day long. As a base, we were totally happy with this area and will head directly there in the future (yes, we are already planning to return).

Hotels in Gran Canaria offer something for every kind of traveller, and Playa del Cura is a great base for exploring, or resting which was what we were after following a very busy start to the year.

Our Stay at H10 Costa Mogán

We stayed at the H10 Costa Mogan, a stylish and contemporary adults-only hotel just a short walk from the beach. The hotel is beautifully designed with coastal-inspired décor, a large outdoor pool, multiple chill-out areas, several bars, two restaurants, wellness activities, and spacious modern rooms.

It’s the perfect place to unwind. The calm, adults-only atmosphere helped us relax from day one. The views from the roof terrace and the fresh, locally-inspired cuisine added to the experience.

Over the weekend too, we received one of Jet2’s helpful messages from a customer service representative, letting us know about a window of time they would be at the hotel, should we have any questions or need help. Fab!

Exploring Puerto de Mogán: Gran Canaria’s “Little Venice”

A highlight of our trip was a visit to picturesque Puerto de Mogán. This charming fishing village is known as ‘Little Venice’ because of its canals and pretty whitewashed houses. Colourful bougainvillaea climbs every balcony, and the marina is lined with cafes and shops.

We spent a few hours strolling the narrow streets, shopping for local gifts and enjoying a seafood lunch by the water. It’s a must-see when visiting Gran Canaria with Jet2. You can easily reach Puerto de Mogán from Playa del Cura by taxi in about 20 minutes, or local bus. In the interest of saving time, we took a cab to and from H10 Costa Mogan hotel, which cost around €20 each way. Taxis here are payable by cash or card.

Tip: found a great coffee at a little place called Sai Heladeria just off the main esplanade near the beach, and €2.50 large beers at the Mogán Bar along the beachfront.

If you want to relax and stay around the hotel, there’s plenty to do. However, you can also engage in a wide range of activities that get you around the island. Adults-Only Relaxation with Jet2holidays

If you’re looking for a child-free, stress-free holiday, we think adults only holidays with Jet2holidays are ideal. This trip was just what we needed – a slow, quiet pace, AMAZING food, stunning views, and revitalising sea air.

Jet2 took care of every detail. From the flights to Gran Canaria to airport transfers and accommodation, everything is streamlined and simple. This package made travelling easy, especially perfect if you want everything in one place. We have booked other package holidays before and actually had a negative experience: we’d not planned to again. However, now we’ve discovered Jet2, quite honestly, we’re not sure we can go back to DIY. We’re already looking at Jet2’s holiday destination map to make a decision on our next trip to book! We’ve got our eyes on Crete and Turkey, although, it’s going to be hard to beat Gran Canaria!

Why Choose Gran Canaria with Jet2?

Before heading to Gran Canaria, we quizzed friends who continue to visit the Canary Islands all year round: now we know why they return. Whether you’re escaping winter or just need a sunny break (which we did after a long British winter), Gran Canaria with Jet2 is a perfect choice. The destination offers warm weather, beautiful landscapes and plenty of opportunities to unwind. Jet2 makes travel smooth, affordable, and stress-free – everything you (and we!) want in a holiday.

With direct flights from multiple airports in Britain, flexible booking, and great hotels, we’re pretty much raving fans of Jet2 now, and highly recommend you check them out while planning your next island getaway. The app is on our phones – originally downloaded for easy access to our booking, but it’s good to browse for travel ideas too. It’s especially handy if you’re prone to a little impulse-booking, as we tend to be!

Eight romantic breaks UK

Eight romantic breaks UK

We’re blessed with many options for romantic breaks UK, they’re not just confined to smart country house hotels. Our cities offer some of the best experiences and romantic weekend breaks. Read on for highlights and things to do

Romantic breaks UK – 8 of our favourites

York

Historic York has more than a little magic. Once the English locus of Viking power, this riverside city still boasts many Viking treasures. Most of the city centre is pleasantly pedestrianised, so you can while away the day wandering the narrow, cobbled ways of York’s Tudor heart, the Shambles.

Today, the Shambles and the neighbouring streets are full of boutiques, souvenir shops and cafes. Meander along them from the impressive York Minster, via the Chocolate Museum to the Jorvik Centre. Find your bearings with a climb to the top of Clifford’s Tower, at the city centre’s southern edge. From here you can see York Castle museum, definitely worth a visit if you are a history buff, and the winding River Ouse.

Amble back up the riverbank through town to dine riverside at The Star Inn the City.  Set in the gardens of St Mary’s Abbey and the Yorkshire Museum, this brasserie is a restaurant with the most romantic view in York.

Ideas on where to stay:

To stay at a city centre location, follow in the footsteps of Kings and stay at the beautiful Grays Court Hotel, just a short step from the Minster. The Judges Lodging is another central option with a historic vibe. If you’re staying in the centre, Roots restaurant on the other side of St Mary’s gardens is a great choice for a Sunday lunch feast of sharing dishes. Follow this with a romantic river cruise before heading home.

If you’d prefer to see a little of the Yorkshire countryside, Aldwark Manor is just a short drive from York. Choose an elegant room in the historic manor house, then roll out of bed on the Sunday morning and amble across the hotel grounds to the local country pub. The Ardwark Arms serves up some of the best Yorkshire puddings in God’s own county.

For a post-prandial amble, you can stretch your legs in the grounds of Castle Howard or Fountains Abbey before the drive home.

Bath

Beautiful Bath’s Georgian elegance can’t help but add a little romance to your weekend.

Start Saturday with a wander around the city. You can pick up a self-guided walking tour by the breath-taking Pulteney Bridge, one of only four bridges in the world to have shops on both sides across its span. From here, an easy stroll will take you past the city’s other landmarks: the Norman spires of the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, and the city’s most famous landmark, its Roman Baths. Stop for lunch in the Bath’s pump room restaurant or kitchen, then continue your walk to take in Gravel Walk, the Royal Crescent and the Circus.

For the ultimate romantic experience, book yourselves the twilight package at the Bath Thermae Spa, where you can enjoy a blissful view across the city rooftops while you relax in the healing waters.

Ideas on where to stay:

From there, you’ll want to retire to your hotel for a little R&R. The Abbey Hotel enjoys a fantastic central location. Plus, you can simply roll downstairs to enjoy pre-dinner cocktails at the ArtBar, followed by dinner in one of the city’s best restaurants, Koffman and Mr Whites – all without leaving your hotel. After a lazy Sunday breakfast, head out of the city to the National Trust’s Prior Park Landscape Garden where you can blow away the cobwebs with wander around these beautiful, historic parkland.

If you prefer a country location, Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa is just a short hop from Bath. Here, you can indulge in an award-winning spa and wellness centre, the hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant and beautiful grounds across the sprawling 500-acre estate – perfect for a lazy Sunday of relaxation before heading home.

Bath is the ultimate romantic break destination in England

Brighton

It’s hard to think of a more eclectic seaside resort than Brighton. It has everything you could ask for in a romantic weekend away. In addition to the seaside location, you can choose from cool cocktail bars, great restaurants, cosy pubs, fantastic clubs and the odd left-field option, such as the arcades and casino at Pier 9 or the brewery tour at Unbarred.

Begin your Saturday meandering by the cafes and boutiques that cluster along Brighton’s Lanes. Here, you can treat yourself to one-off gifts, antiques or handmade jewellery.  Enticing lunch stops abound along these narrow alleyways but dead wax social is a fab option for wood-fired pizza and craft beer. Why not wander back along the seafront for a stroll along Brighton Pier before spending the afternoon touring one of Brighton’s most outré landmarks, the Regency era Royal Pavilion, the seaside pleasure palace of King George IV.

For a seaside pleasure palace of your own, check in to the Artist Residence hotel; ask for a room with a free-standing bath and sea view. Then head back to the seafront for dinner at Brighton’s best seafood restaurant, the Salt Room (the view’s not bad either).

On Sunday, if the seafront is still calling to you, you can head to a Brighton institution, the Red Roaster café where you can enjoy the view, the ambience and a lazy brunch.

Brighton is great for a romantic break away

Whitstable

Whitstable enjoys a very different pace to Brighton but very much fits into the ‘romantic breaks UK’ category. This is an old-fashioned fishing village turned seaside resort on Kent’s north coast. It’s most famous for its oyster beds, so you have every excuse to indulge in this traditional aphrodisiac!

Head to the seafront and harbour to take your fill of bracing sea air. The little high street is worth a wander too; you can browse the galleries and craft shops. The Whitstable Oyster Company is located in an old oyster shed in the middle of town, so it’s an ideal lunch stop. As well as the fresh seafood, you can enjoy the view to the beach.

Later, you can spend the afternoon wandering around the gardens of the eighteenth-century Whitstable castle, just a short walk away.

Accommodation options are limited, but one is a deluxe sea-view room at the Hotel Continental on the seafront. This hotel also operates some of the old fishman huts by the seashore; their sea views add a little extra romance to the proposition.

It’s just a short stumble from there to the Whitstable Oyster shack on the harbour’s east quay. Hopefully, you haven’t had your fill of seafood, because the location is really wonderful.

If you are staying at the fisherman’s huts, you’ll want to head back into town for Sunday brunch at the Farm and Harper or, further afield, at JoJo’s meze restaurant. If you have time to spare on the Sunday, why not rent a bike in town?  From here you can cycle the Crab and Winkle Way; a pleasingly short six-mile ride through the Kentish countryside to Canterbury.

Whitstable is a gorgeous fishing village and very romantic for a break away in the UK

Lake District

There’s a reason the Lake District was such an inspiration to the Romantic poets. Its shimmering lakes and lofty hills will bring a song to even the most frozen of hearts. It’s one of the best spots for a romantic UK break away.

People come here to walk, mainly, and there are plenty of activities of the outdoor adventure kind on offer throughout the national park. But there are also plenty of more sedate options around the tourist hot spots of Windemere and Grasmere or the busy town of Keswick.

Book a suite at the Brimstone hotel in Langdale and you may never want to leave its luxurious rooms and spa. There are a myriad of walks on your doorstep; a slow meander up Langdale will take you to the National Trust Sticklebarn pub for lunch. Or follow the rise over to Grasmere where you can visit Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage, take a row boat out on the water and try some of the town’s famous gingerbread.

Another fabulous option is the Lodore Falls hotel on the banks of Derwentwater.  Book a spa suite for full access to the hotel’s Falls spa and the mesmerising views across the lake. From here, you can take your pick of the walks through the Borrowdale valley. The Langstrath Arms in nearby Stonethwaite is a traditional country pub within walking distance. Or the hotel can arrange paddle-boarding out on the water.

On Sunday, stop in at Windemere on the way home for a walk around the shops (mostly outdoor clothing brands), a trip on the paddle steamer or a stroll around the grounds of Wray castle.

Windermere and the Lakes District - perfect options for romantic breaks UK

Edinburgh

It’s not hard to fall in love with the hardy but graceful Scottish capital. Edinburgh has historic sites galore and a thriving food scene, so it’s perfect as one of your romantic breaks UK options.

If you’re new to the city, you’ll want to start with a stroll down Princes Street Gardens from the Scott Monument. This Victorian gothic edifice celebrating the writer Sir Walter Scott is a great place to start; climb its winding internal staircase for striking views over the city, including down Princes Street to St Johns church. Art lovers can take a detour to the Scottish National Gallery, which houses one of the best collections of art in the world. Then stop for some lunch along colourful Victoria Street or the Grassmarket, before heading up to check out the view from the castle.

Back down the hill, you can check into the ‘unmitigated pleasure palace’ that is the Witchery, which claims to be Edinburgh’s most romantic bolt-hole. Close by, the suites at Old Town Chambers luxury serviced apartments are equally well-appointed, minus the gothic drama. Stay at either location and, on Sunday morning, you can take a wander over to Dean Village and Stockbridge. Stockbridge is choc-full of independent cafes and places for brunch, plus on Sunday mornings it hosts a local market, making it ideal for a romantic Sunday morning stroll.

Edinburgh in Scotland is endlessly romantic for a break away

Cardiff

The capital of Wales is a dreamy destination to add to your romantic breaks UK hit-list. The centre of Cardiff is immensely walkable, so you can treat yourself to a shopping marathon (don’t miss browsing the stalls at the Victorian central market) or simply take in the sights. Make time to explore the splendid castle; even if you aren’t wowed by history, the view from the ramparts is worth the visit. If you have time, follow the Bute Park sculpture trail in what was once the castle grounds.

Later, wander across town to the marina and Norwegian church. Close by, the St David’s Bay hotel on the waterfront is a great choice, especially if you can squeeze in a few hours to laze in its spa or splurge on a few treatments. It’s also ideally placed if you have tickets to an event at the Millennium Centre. The view from the pool across the sparkling waters of Cardiff Bay adds to the appeal.

If you prefer something a little more intimate, head out of town to Holm House in Penarth. It sits on a bluff overlooking the bay, and you can wander down in the evening to enjoy dinner at  the Michelin-starred Restaurant James Sommerin, Cardiff’s only Michelin-starred restaurant.

If you are staying in Penarth, wandering down to the seafront can occupy some of your Sunday morning too. Or, if you have time, head up towards the valleys and explore the atmospheric Castell Coch followed by Sunday lunch at a traditional country pub like the Pantmawr Inn.

Cardiff is a cool city and perfect for a romantic break

London city break

Any romantic breaks UK list will include London, because it’s spectacular! The best way to appreciate London as a romantic weekend destination is to accept you can’t do everything; decide what you want to do and work from there.

If you want to take in a theatre show, pick a boutique hotel like Batty Langley‘s near Liverpool Street.

You can spend Saturday wandering around Soho or shopping on Oxford Street, then meander around Covent Garden on the Sunday.

Alternatively, if you fancy seeing some of the main tourist sights, a hotel such as St Ermins or the Shangri La at the Shard might be a better choice. From here, you can walk up the riverside from the London Eye up to the Tower of London. Make a day of it by stopping off at a variety of cafes and bars en route. Cross Tower Bridge to take a tour of the tower and then you can catch the Thames Clipper back to your starting point.

Next morning, the walk from Buckingham Palace  to Horseguards Parade and the Houses of Parliament is a relaxing way to start your Sunday. It includes a romantic meander through St James Park. Then head for lunch at Borough Market before heading home.

there's so much to do in London - it's a perfect break with plenty of romance

Each of these cities has something truly special and unique to offer. Whichever you choose for your romantic breaks UK destinations, you can create a wonderfully romantic itinerary for a weekend away that creates memories you’ll both treasure forever.

Top 5: Where to stay in Malta

Top 5: Where to stay in Malta

Malta is an incredible place which offers a lot to practically anyone who wants to stay. But what do you need to think about when it comes to where to stay in Malta? There’s a variety of choices across a wide space, so the choice might be tricky. Luckily there are some absolutely incredible parts of Malta to stay and any one of them can be a great choice for you. Let’s take a look at five of the best places to stay in Malta to help you decide.

Malta or Gozo - where is the best place to stay

Our top 5 picks: where to stay in Malta

Mellieħa Bay

The first place that we want to take a look at is Mellieħa Bay. This is a very relaxed locale with beautiful scenery and a palpable sense of chill. Beaches, coastal areas and modern accommodation and dining all await the guests of this choice. I’d recommend it for people who want to have a very chilled out and relaxing holiday, because it’s really something special.

Recommended:

For just a few euro, we spent the day lazing about at Ray’s Lido. Sleep on a day bed, enjoy some bubbles, read a book and watch the world go by.

Find out our best tips on where to stay in Malta

Valletta

If you’re not interested in a chilled out holiday, then it might be a good idea to invest in Valletta. The old capital city of Malta, this is a wonderful place to visit because there’s so much to do. There’s a lot of great history, shopping opportunities and dining chances. You just have to make sure that you have researched the public transport links because trust me, it can get busy!

Valletta is convenient because it’s central. The island’s buses all head into here, and from here you can reach other areas of Malta on public transport. Find out more about things to do here.

Sliema/St Julians

This wonderful waterfront promenade is home to our third destination for people to stay in Malta, and it’s the best place to stay in Malta if you want lively nightlife. This is the bar and club area, which is worthwhile for anyone who wants to enjoy themselves in the evenings!

Along the Sliema waterfront you’ll also find a beautiful boardwalk for walking, running, exploring; and there’s great bars along there with afternoon cocktail and meal deals.

Where to stay in Malta to discover the best landscapes

St Paul’s Bay

St Paul’s Bay can be looked at more as a resort than anything else. Set around a picturesque bay, find an ocean front apartment to stay in for a chilled-out break. As far as options on where to stay in Malta, this area offers newer accommodation, a bit like Mellieħa Bay further around the coastline. It’s a great option if you’re seeking a beach holiday, rather than a city break, which is what Valletta offers.

Gozo Island

Gozo Island is a wonderful location which offers a charm all its own. It’s an island, and has its own city and customs which you can enjoy. It’s still quite near the mainland so you don’t have to worry about whether or not you can enjoy all of Malta. There’s easy transportation on and off the island, which is good for people who want to come back and forth at their leisure.

You can catch a ferry between Malta and Gozo from various points on Malta. Sometimes accommodation deals are cheaper on Gozo, which is why we’ve included it as one of our best options on where to stay in Malta.

Find out the best place to stay in Malta

These are five areas in Malta I would recommend that you consider basing yourself. They’re all stunning. For another perspective, we like this local’s guide on where to stay in Malta.

It’s so important to have somewhere to stay that works for you as a traveller – what kind of trip to you want (active, chilled), and what are your transport options? These will feed into where to choose. For further tips on the best places to stay in Malta, take a look at this guide, or drop us a line in the comments with your questions.

Historic hotels London city: Batty Langley’s Georgian glamour

Historic hotels London city: Batty Langley’s Georgian glamour

What does the term ‘historic hotels London city’ bring to mind for you? Maybe it’s the Ritz over near Buckingham Palace, with its famous afternoon tea. There’s the Savoy and Claridge’s, certainly. I used to walk past stunning St Pancras each day on the way to work, it qualifies.

But did you know about Batty Langley’s?

Listed as one of London’s six best hotels in Conde Nast‘s Gold List, it’s time you definitely did hear about it ⭐

Hotels London city: WHY you need to experience Batty Langley’s

Batty Langley’s in London city near Liverpool street doesn’t even look like a hotel from the outside! It’s completely unassuming. To step inside feels precisely like you’ve stepped back in time. Georgian times, to be exact.

I read a piece about this historic hotel in London city that captured it beautifully for me. The review mentioned that while this place is a hotel, it doesn’t feel like one.

It feels more like you’re visiting your [very] rich aunt’s house.

It’s so true, in the most affectionate of ways

We’ve written about staycations in London and accommodation you can try in east London – Shoreditch and Liverpool Street – but we’ve never seen anything like this!

The attention to detail and perfect mix of old meets new is truly something special.

Batty Langleys hotel in central London

Adventures in the past

The hotel is housed in a restored Georgian building, and is named after Batty Langley (1696–1751) who published guides for the upper class on how to tastefully plan a lavish home.

Inspired by Batty’s work, proprietors Douglas Blain and Peter McKay went to extraordinary lengths to recreate the style of the era. Their labour of love took 20 years to complete, but the finished product is exquisite.

With the exception of a few modern luxuries like smart televisions; furnishings, art, antiques and ornaments from Georgian times have been sourced and decorate the property.

Batty Langleys meeting room

Full of Georgian characters

Our room was on the 5th floor, which we accessed by a little elevator. Cooper and I definitely had a ‘pinch me’ moment upon entering the Kitty Fisher suite. It was like living a past life where we were RICH – we had a balcony with city views, huge four poster bed, a little library and sitting room, and a grand bathroom complete with a genuine Victorian canopy bathing machine.

Kitty Fisher is another Georgian character whose name graces the hotel’s walls. She was a courtesan, known as the subject of a nursery rhyme: “Lucy Locket lost her pocket, Kitty Fisher found it…”.

Ms Fisher came from humble beginnings when she was a milliner (maker of fashionable hats). But the story goes that her beauty, smarts and charm led to her mixing in the right circles and hence she climbed the social ladder of her time.

If we were to ever tire of our own luxurious Georgian suite named after Kitty, we had the rest of the place to enjoy too.

Despite having 29 rooms (all named after interesting Georgian characters) tucked away within the hotel, it’s rare to see another soul. So, off we went, to laze about in the old library, Downton Abbey style; and enjoy a whiskey by the fireplace in the olde-world stylish sitting room.

Facts about Georgian times that add flavour to a stay

While we were at Batty Langley’s, the staff shared some interesting facts with us. Did you know that hotels only really came into being during the first half of the 1800s? Before the Industrial Revolution which began in the 1700s, most people lived and worked on the land, and wouldn’t have ventured very far. In the 1800s things started to change with the Industrial Revolution and the steam locomotive. The middle class – who ran and owned businesses – began to travel, and hotels became their beautiful escape. You can imagine this scenario within the palatial walls of Batty Langley’s boutique establishment.

We also looked at how well made the furniture is from Georgian times. If you examine a wardrobe, for example, you will see the effort that has gone into ensuring the grain is all in the same direction. Evidence of this craftsmanship adorns the hotel.

Finally, did you know that despite the period being entirely romanticised now, the Georgians didn’t have bathrooms? Apparently everyone stank! Very few houses had running water, the streets were filled with rubbish and animal excrement, and chamber pots were often emptied out of windows onto the street. It’s a far cry from the cleanliness and opulence you’ll experience within the hotel and surrounding streets today, but interesting to know about all the same. What do you think?

London city stay: what to expect in the area

We don’t need to be sold on east London (we’re fans!), although staying at Batty Langley’s gave us renewed appreciation for our surroundings.

Convenience wise, the hotel’s perfectly located for any kind of stay in London. You’re within walking distance of Liverpool Street and Shoreditch stations, so can get anywhere, easily.

Just up the road is Spitalfields, which houses markets, foodie delights, pubs and shopping. You can walk to famous Brick Lane for a curry in about 15 minutes.

Back to the history: it’s all around you, inside the hotel and outside. From cobbled streets to elegant old churches and imaginative architecture: go exploring in this exciting corner of old London.

Spitalfields itself was originally the site of the Priory of St Mary Spital, or Hospital, established in 1197! Part of the hospital’s kitchen lies under the hotel building and more substantial remains can be seen in a floodlit underground chamber just around the corner in Spital Square.

Residential development of the area began when King Henry VIII renounced the Pope’s authority and seized all English monasteries in 1540, selling off to loyal subjects. The area became attractive to immigrant settlers who were not allowed to live or work in London city itself. At that time, this area was just outside the city walls.

We spotted evidence of different period buildings as we wandered the streets here. Of course Georgian architecture is obvious too, known by its red brick and symmetrical shape.

Exclusive accommodation in east London

What can we say other than this hotel is absolutely beautiful? It’s cosy enough that you feel at home, yet luxurious with quality touches and service expected in a fine hotel. The staff were perfect as well. (thank you!).

Batty Langley‘s website says:

Our quiet, characterful bedrooms are furnished with genuine antiques, and every one is different. Our bathrooms are so extraordinary, guests often ask if they can take them home. Your surroundings here are civilised: old fashioned hospitality, friendly, efficient staff, and a location second to none.

Where to stay: The Wellesley, for a little Christmas luxury

The Wellesley is set within prestigious Knightsbridge, and provides easy access to all the Christmas experiences listed above, and much more. It is not yet a year old following extensive renovations which transformed the property from musical venue to luxe townhouse hotel. Gatsbyesque glamour sets the tone, and this boutique property is worth the dollar outlay if you’re seeking luxury alongside unparalleled service while in London.

The Roaring Twenties carry on at The Wellesley through cleverly considered interiors like crystal chandeliers, original artwork, mirrored panelling and lavish cream and gold colour scheme. It’s also a romantic building for anyone keen on being immersed in history − indeed it used to be the site of the original Hyde Park Corner tube station in the 1920s, and telling architectural signs are evident upon the exterior of the property and from within.

The Wellesley attracts a high calibre of clientèle, but is accessible for anyone seeking a night or more of pure indulgence. The hotel is conveniently situated for shopping, up-market bars and a wander around Hyde Park. Beautifully restored in Art Deco style with a contemporary twist, The Wellesley is a feast for the senses, offering the discerning traveller copious luxury surprises and outstanding personalised service.
